Chai Baba, Kelowna tea house

July 12, 2019 Eat & Drink Okanagan

Contributed by Dr. Rena Saini ND

The moment I walk in a beautiful aroma of teas surrounds me.  Smells of lavender, berries, green, rooibos, jasmine,  and aromatic spices overcome my senses and I instantly feel calm.

The staff welcomes me by name as I stroll in and find a spot to sit.  I order a lavender fog with coconut milk (and some cinnamon) paired with the most amazing mint dark chocolate bar I’ve had! (another experience I could write an article about!)

Chai Baba is a little oasis in downtown that makes you feel like you are at home.   The cozy atmosphere is decorated with beautiful artwork from local artist Aaron K Metz (@aaronmetzartist).  Plants overhang from the ceiling decorated with tiny lights. Rocks and statues peek out from tables and corners.  A couple of cozy couches are scattered throughout the room.  Throughout the store you can find the perfect tea accessory.  From a beautiful mug to tea strainers, teapots to airtight tea storage units.  And of course behind the register, you will find a wall full of different organic teas.

They are divided into categories of green, black, fruit and herbal.  In these categories are tasty blends of teas, herbs, flowers, and berries. You can purchase Chai baba’s original combinations or individual teas, if there is a tea you can’t live without.

Of course, being a Naturopath I am a BIG promoter of teas.  Besides tasting amazing they all have medicinal actions that help heal our body.   Teas such as green or jasmine have an abundance of antioxidants.  It helps balance the body by promoting anti-aging, preventing cardiovascular disease, increasing weight loss, helps balance kidney function, and decreases skin issues and inflammation, and enhances mood.

If you are craving a bitter taste, skip the coffee and try the yerba mate!  This type of green tea has additional benefits of detoxifying the liver and decreases cholesterol as well as all the benefits of green tea.

Crystal the owner of Chai Baba has also added medicinal herbs to her tea blends (which makes me even more excited!!!).  Herbs are medicinal parts of plants… such as the leaves, berries or roots. For example in Chai Baba’s  “Queen of hearts “you will find a blend of rosehips, apple, hibiscus petals, and orange.  This blend naturally will increase immunity, detoxify the liver, increase digestion, and skin conditions.

…. It also tastes amazing!  If you are uncertain on which tea blend to take, the staff is super friendly and will help you find the taste you are looking for.

I personally love the quiet and serene atmosphere in this little store.  I’ve had some of my most amazing ideas, meetings and inspirations happen at Chai baba ☺    If you are looking something different, come on in and check it out… it is sure to deliver an experience you will not find anymore else in Kelowna!
